It is first and foremost a preliminary SAT exam. But for many students, its importance is centered on the fact that it is the one and only exam that allows the highest-achieving students in the nation to qualify for National Merit —a title and honor that can, for many students, garner larger amounts of scholarship than any other exam. The PSAT is the sole factor for determining National Merit eligibility.
Our approach to the PSAT is designed to give the students time to practice for the PSAT as the exam is only offered once each year. Students usually take it their sophomore and junior years, and then their junior year is the year National Merit eligibility is determined.
In the fall, we provide a crash course for students to refresh their skills and timing while again covering the following areas: the structure and predictable elements of the exam, direct instruction over core content, tips for attacking specific question types, and the all important timing of the exam, along with timed-practice over real PSAT test questions.
Since we have been doing PSAT prep, we have guided many students to the National Merit Semifinalist status. As a result, the students were eligible for hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship money.
